A business name is not a company. You still need an ABN, and the name does not create a separate legal entity.
Who can hold the name
An individual needs a valid ABN. A company holder needs a valid ACN (and usually an ABN). Check digits are validated before lodgement.
Place of business
ASIC requires a physical street address in Australia. PO Boxes are not accepted as the principal place of business.
How long it lasts
You can register for 1 year or 3 years. Renew before expiry or the name can become available to others.
